Skate Manchester is teaming up with Octopus Energy to bring an incredible new twist to the city’s winter celebrations. Standing tall in Cathedral Gardens, the 15-metre Fatboy Spin wind turbine will partially power the rink and replace the traditional Christmas tree as this year’s dazzling festive centrepiece.
Imagine gliding beneath the lights, spinning around a wind-powered landmark, and being part of a first-of-its-kind winter experience in Manchester. But this partnership is about more than spectacle, it’s about community. Octopus Energy is inviting local youth football teams from its Kits for Kids programme for free skating sessions, sharing the magic of the rink with the next generation.

The rink will be open to the public from 25 October 2025, until 4 January 2026, except on Christmas Day.
The rink opens at 10am and closes 9pm (last session starts at 8pm).
Skating sessions last up to 45 minutes. We recommend that you arrive 30 to 40 minutes before your session to get ready to take to the ice.
